I never look at my iTunes e-mails, but today I saw the headline "the Metallica collection" so I decided to click through.
Apparently, with the magic of computers you can purchase Metallica's entire 168 song catalog for the low, low price of $99.95!
These guys just don't get it, do they?
I'm not sure but $99.95 seems really high for what is essentially just a bunch of mp3's.
Is there anyone out there who doesn't own half of these albums anyway?
Who is it who says, "hmm, I don't own anything by Metallica, maybe it's time I owned EVERYTHING by Metallica!"
Also, I'm not a fan of CD's at all, but given the choice, if I'm spending 100 bucks I at least want the physical product.
I guarantee you could get every Metallica album for less than $100 in 2 or 3 trips to used CD stores, or just ask your headbanger uncle (I know you have one) for his old cassette tapes.
Anyway, it just seemed like that was a lot, but I guess I don't really buy stuff from iTunes so maybe I'm wrong.
Yep, Diamond Head is super awesome.
You may not know the name, but if you've listened to Metallica's "Garage" albums you've heard their songs.
I always meant to check these guys out and I'm glad I finally did.
I've only heard their first album, "Lightning to the Nations" but it's really good.
There's only 7 songs, 5 of which have been covered by Metallica.
That's a whopping 71%!
Also, you really hear where Metallica got their sound after listening to these guys. Apparently Lars had gone to England and was hanging around with them when they were writing a lot of their stuff.
Lesson 1: Don't let Lars Ulrich in your house, he will steal your sound.
Anyway, these guys should have been huge.
They were part of the NWOBHM at the same time Iron Maiden and Def Leppard were starting out, but they were managed by the singer's mom, who apparently turned down a management offer from Q Prime.
Bad Idea.
Anyway, everyone else got huge and Diamond Head just kept sloggin' away.
From what I can tell from their official site, they're still active, but they never seem to play North America.
Oh well, check 'em out, they're awesome, you'll love it, and you'll even thanks Lars for bringing them to your attention.
It's pretty good.
Ok, I've only heard it once, but it kinda sounded like a cross between "...And justice for all" and the totally over-rated "black album." Everybody wants "Master of Puppets" again, but it's just not possible.
Honestly, this is probably the best Metallica will ever be from this point forward, so relax and enjoy it, one day you'll look back and wish they would release something like this again.
It's pretty heavy and it sounds great, thanks to Rick Rubin. I'm sure Bob Rock is a good guy, and he's made some killer records, but it's hard to find a Metallica fan who doesn't want to punch him in the nuts.
Anyway, like I said, I've only heard it once so far, but I thought it was good, so for gosh sakes, go listen to it!
Finding Metallica records used to be exciting and fun.
Now it totally sucks!
Well, I dunno, I'm just annoyed because it took me a long time to find all those early albums, and now when you go into a record store they have at least 10 copies of each!
Of course, if I didn't have them, I'd think this was great.
Isn't it weird how that works?
1. Iron Maiden - Everything from 1980-1988 - It's just easier than writing them all out, every album from that era kills!
2. Guns 'n' Roses - Appetite for Destruction - still a classic, I wore this tape out in Grade 7.
3. Sex Pistols - Never Mind the Bollocks - is there anyone who doesn't own this?
4. Nirvana - Nevermind - It's hard to listen to this one without all the hype and crap getting in the way, but even so many years later you can see why it was such a big deal. It's just one of the greatest albums ever, but I'm tired of hearing about it.
5. CKY - Infiltrate Destroy Rebuild - I listened to this disc for a year straight, unfortunately, I don't think they'll ever match this one again.
6. The Living End - Roll On - Ditto.
7. Weezer - The Blue Album - Nearly Perfect. Still holds up.
8. KISS - Destroyer - the one KISS album that actually lives up to the hype. How did they do that? Simultaneously their greatest triumph and the impossible standard they would forever be held to.
9. NOFX - White Trash... - This was one of those 'revelation' albums for me, where you realize that everything else that's going on besides this sucks.
10. Van Halen - 1984 - They finally reached their peak, only to lose it all right away when Dave left. It was just never the same after that. They got too sappy.
11.The Smiths - The Queen is Dead - After careful deliberation I decided to move this one out of the Honourable Mentions. It's just too good!
Honourable Mentions:
Green Day - Dookie - yes, we're all sick of this one, but all the songs are good!
Metallica - ...And Justice for all - My first Metallica album, a window into a bigger world.
Priestess - Hello Master - Deadly.
Beastie Boys - Licensed to Ill - Some of the lyrics on this one are a
little embarrassing now, but I still have this whole disc imprinted on
my brain.
Faith No More - The Real Thing - this list will forever be a work in progress...
Pinback - Blue Screen Life - I can't believe I forgot about this one!
Hey a few days ago (or weeks, who can keep track?) I was on here whining like a little bitch because someone grabbed Metallica's "Black Album" on vinyl before I had a chance to. Well good news everyone, I went into the same store yesterday and there it was! And it was even less than before, I didn't understand, but I wasn't about to complain! So anyway, that was kinda funny, I guess this is kind of a useless post, but I was glad to get the Black Album, even though it pales in comparison to "Ride the Lightning."
